Artist Statement

Azura Silberschmidt (she/her) is a wayfaring photographic artist and founder of Remaking Photography. Weaving together image-making and storytelling, her practice traces shifting terrains of identity, memory and representation. Her work is shaped by lived experiences in the shadow of the Swiss Bernese Alps, by the Waikato riverside in Aotearoa and through the sugarcane fields of unceded Wargamaygan Country in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Artist Biography

Azura Silberschmidt was born in Australia, grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand and now lives in Switzerland, where she works as a photographer. In her practice, she combines documentary and artistic approaches, exploring topics of identity, representation and social justice. Her body of work, Rainbow Serpent, Rustling Wind, was exhibited in 2025 at BelleVue – Ort für Fotografie in Basel; in 2026, she presented her research at the international conference Shifting the Frame – Women’s Photographic Practices (1840–1960) in Porto. She is a member of Purple Eye, a network of professional Swiss photographers.

Commissioning Biography

Azura Silberschmidt is a Swiss-based photographic artist, researcher and facilitator whose practice combines documentary and artistic approaches to explore identity, representation and social justice. Working across commissioned, collaborative and research-led projects, she creates photographs that foreground care, dialogue and ethical image-making. Born in Australia, raised in Aotearoa New Zealand and now based in Switzerland, Azura draws on diverse cultural and geographical experiences to inform her visual practice. She studied a Bachelor of Arts in Process Design at HyperWerk followed by a Master of Arts in Transversal Design at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW, where she developed interdisciplinary methodologies that bridge photography, storytelling and participatory research. She examines how photography can challenge dominant narratives and create more inclusive forms of representation. Through collaborative image-making, archival research and socially engaged practice, she works with individuals and communities to produce images that are both visually compelling and socially meaningful. Her work, Rainbow Serpent, Rustling Wind, was exhibited at BelleVue – Ort für Fotografie in Basel in 2025. In 2026, she presented her research at the international conference Shifting the Frame – Women's Photographic Practices (1840–1960) in Porto.
